TONIGHT, IT IS MY HONOR TO RECOGNIZE THE RECIPIENTS OF THE CAROLINE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS ASPIRING TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP.

THIS YEAR'S SELECTION PROCESS WAS ESPECIALLY CHALLENGING, AS OUR COMMITTEE REVIEWED APPLICATIONS FROM MANY QUALIFIED CANDIDATES.

THE TALENT, LEADERSHIP, SERVICE, AND PASSION FOR EDUCATION DEMONSTRATED BY OUR STUDENTS MADE THIS A THOUGHTFUL BUT DIFFICULT DECISION.

THE ASPIRING TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP WAS ESTABLISHED BY THE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO IDENTIFY, SUPPORT, AND INVEST IN GRADUATES WHO ASPIRE TO ENTER THE FIELD OF EDUCATION.

THIS SCHOLARSHIP REFLECTS THE BOARD'S BELIEF THAT WE HAVE FUTURE EDUCATORS RIGHT HERE IN OUR CLASSROOMS AND OUR COMMITMENT TO DEVELOPING THE TALENT, THAT WE SEE WHILE SUPPORTING THE NEEDS OF OUR SCHOOLS, INCLUDING CRITICAL SHORTAGE AREAS, AND THE CONTINUED DIVERSIFICATION OF OUR STAFF.

AFTER A THOROUGH AND THOUGHTFUL REVIEW PROCESS, WE ARE PROUD TO RECOGNIZE THIS YEAR'S SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS.

WE ALSO HAVE LAYLA BB CUNNINGHAM, NORTH CAROLINA HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE.

LAYLA PLANS ON ATTENDING CHESAPEAKE COLLEGE AND GRADUATING WITH THE SALISBURY COHORT, ALSO MAJORING IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION.

THE TOP FUNDRAISERS IN EACH GRADE WERE REWARDED WITH A SILLY STRING THE PRINCIPAL'S AWARD.

AND LASTLY, WEEK OF THE YOUNG CHILD CELEBRATION FILLED WITH ENGAGING ACTIVITIES AND IT ENDED IN A BUBBLE SHOW.

THEN THEY HAD PARTICIPATION WITH THEIR SGA SLASH THEIR STUDENT VOICE.

AND THEN TEACHER APPRECIATION.

AND THE FIFTH GRADERS, THEY TOOK A TRIP TO D.C.

AND SOME OF THEIR UPCOMING EVENTS, THEY'RE GOING TO CONTINUE WITH MATH MCAT THIS TIME FOR THIRD THROUGH FIFTH GRADE.

AND THEIR END OF THE YEAR I-READY DIAGNOSTICS.

THEN THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE THEIR STAFF AND APPRECIATION WEEK AND SPECIAL EVENTS.

MAY 11TH THROUGH THE 15TH IS BUY ONE GET ONE AT THE BOOK FAIR.

STUDENT CONNECTION DAY WAS A HUGE SUCCESS.

WE GOT TO DISCOVER ALL THE UNIQUE INTERESTS OF OUR STAFF AND MAKE POSITIVE CONNECTIONS WITH OTHER STUDENTS AND STAFF THAT THEY DON'T USUALLY GET TO WORK WITH.

AND THEY ALSO HAD A A SUCCESSFUL WEEK OF MCAT AND ELA TESTING, AND THEN STUDENTS WORKED HARD TO SHOW WHAT THEY KNEW.

SEVERAL STUDENTS WERE FORMED AND HAD ART DISPLAYED IN THE DISTRICT KALEIDOSCOPE FINE ARTS EVENT.

SOME OF THEIR UPCOMING EVENTS IS THE STATE U.S.

HISTORY ASSESSMENT, MCAT MATH TESTING, THERE'S SIXTH GRADERS AND SEVENTH GRADERS LAST DANCES A YEAR.

I FEEL LIKE LOUGHLIN HAS LIKE SEVEN DANCES A YEAR, LIKE THEY ALWAYS HAVE TO DO IT.

AND THEN THE SIXTH GRADE JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT FIELD TRIP TO BAYSTOWN. THEN SEVENTH GRADE FIELD TRIP TO ATKINS AUDITORIUM.

THE SEVENTH GRADE CAREER DAY AND THEN A SPRING CONCERT.

AND MOVING ON TO MY SCHOOL FOR THE LAST TIME.

MR. SPIKER SAID WHAT WE CELEBRATE IN MAY IS WHAT WE PRIORITIZE ALL YEAR.

AND LAST MONTH WE HAD ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL APPRECIATION WEEK.

WE HAD OUR BLOOD DRIVE, THEN THE RHYTHM OF THE BRIDGE HAD THEIR ELITE INDUCTION.

THEN WE HAD UNITY FAIR.

AFTER THE SLIDE, THERE'S GOING TO BE SOME PICTURES FROM IT, BUT IT WAS REALLY FUN.

I PARTICIPATED IN THE NATURAL HAIR SHOW, AND THEN I ALSO HAD A TABLE THAT WAS REPRESENTING TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO.

I HAD LITTLE SAMPLES, AND I KNOW, MS. WAYMAN, YOU TRIED SOMETHING THAT I HAD.

SO IT WAS FUN.

THEN DRAMA AND SPRING SHOW OF MEAN GIRLS.

MAY 4TH IS LUNCH HERO DAY.

MAY 6TH IS NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION.

IN ADDITION, 84% OF THE STUDENTS SAID THIS BOOK HAD MADE THEM THINK DIFFERENTLY ABOUT THEIR NEXT STEPS.

YOU SEE TWO QUOTES FROM STUDENTS AS WELL, AND JUST IN SUMMARY, YEAH, KIDS DON'T LIKE TO READ ANYMORE.

THEY ALSO BARELY LIKE TO LISTEN, BUT THOSE AND THIS BOOK ALSO DOES COME IN AUDIO, SO WE ACTUALLY DID BOTH.

WE HAD SOME AUDIO VERSION CHAPTERS AND SOME THE STUDENTS READ, AND SOME WE READ OUT LOUD.

WE VARIED HOW WE DID THE LESSONS.

BUT THIS STUDENT, YEAH, KIDS DON'T LIKE TO READ AND BARELY LISTEN, BUT THOSE WHO WILL AND ARE, THEY CAN LEARN FROM IT AND GET A STARTING IDEA OF WHAT IT REALLY MEANS TO BE READY FOR COLLEGE AND HAVE A CAREER IF THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE CHOOSING.

AND EVEN IF IT'S NOT, IT'S GOOD LESSONS ON HOW TO MAKE MATURE AND RELIABLE DECISIONS WHEN YOU'RE OLDER IN LIFE.

I THEN PULLED A BOOK COMMITTEE THAT CONSISTED OF SCHOOL PRINCIPALS, SUPERVISORS, AND PARENTS.

THEY PASSED THIS RESOLUTION THE SAME DAY THAT THEY APPROVED OUR WAIVER REQUEST.

AND THEY HAD A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF WAIVER REQUESTS THAT CAME IN AT THIS MEETING.

SOME WERE APPROVED, SOME WERE PARTIALLY APPROVED, AND SOME WERE NOT APPROVED.

AND THE STATE BOARD WANTED TO PROVIDE...

KIND OF GUIDANCE FOR SCHOOL SYSTEMS FOR CONSIDERATION IN THE FUTURE THAT IF YOU'RE GOING TO COME BEFORE THE BOARD AND ASK FOR A WAIVER WHEN WE HAVE ONE OF THESE REALLY BAD YEARS, THEY KIND OF SET NEW GROUND RULES FOR ALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY THAT THEY COMPLY WITH IN THEIR CALENDARS STARTING NEXT YEAR.

THEY DID UNDERSTAND THAT ALL BOARDS HAD ALREADY APPROVED THEIR CALENDARS FOR THE 26-27 YEAR AND THEY ASKED THAT THE ADJUSTMENTS BE MADE WITHIN THE CALENDAR.

SO WHAT IS BEFORE YOU TONIGHT ACTUALLY IS A VERSION OF OUR CALENDAR THAT WAS KIND OF WHAT WE DID IN ACTION THIS YEAR.

THE RESOLUTION 2601 REQUIRED SCHOOL SYSTEMS TO HAVE A MINIMUM OF AT LEAST THREE DAYS FOR ECONOMIC WEATHER DAYS IDENTIFIED NEAR THE END OF THE YEAR DAYS THAT WE ALL DO, THE SNOW DAYS.

AND THEY REQUIRED SCHOOL SYSTEMS TO IDENTIFY AT LEAST THREE OTHER DAYS THAT COULD BE THE TAKE-BACK DAYS, IS WHAT I WOULD CALL THEM.

THAT IF THE WEATHER WAS SO BAD WE NEEDED TO MAKE OTHER CALENDAR ALTERATIONS, WE DO IT ON THE FRONT END.

WHAT THE STATE BOARD WAS GOING FOR WAS KIND OF THE FORWARD PLANNING THAT A SCHOOL SYSTEM WOULD GO THROUGH IN THE WORST CASE SCENARIO.

BUT THE UPFRONT PLANNING FOR, OKAY, IF IT GETS BAD ENOUGH AND WE HAVE TO TAKE OTHER DAYS, HERE'S WHERE WE'RE SHOWING AT LEAST THREE OTHERS.

INSTEAD OF DOING IT AS THE SNOW PILED IN ON US.

I THINK CAROLINE OFFERS A REALLY UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE THAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS WE'RE LOOKING AT THIS IN A SMALLER SCHOOL SYSTEM.

AND THE GOAL OF OUR GROUP IS TO PUT FORTH THE RECOMMENDATIONS THAT HOPEFULLY THE LEGISLATURE WILL PICK UP NEXT YEAR.

WE HAVE HEARD THE LEGISLATURE HAS AN APPETITE FOR DOING SOMETHING WITH SCHOOL CALENDARS NEXT YEAR.

THIS WAS A TOUGH YEAR NOT JUST FOR EASTERN SHORE SCHOOL SYSTEMS, BUT A TOUGH YEAR FOR MORE DIVERSE SYSTEMS LIKE MONTGOMERY COUNTY.

THEY HAVE A LOT MORE RELIGIONS TO THINK ABOUT.

IT WAS A TOUGH YEAR ACROSS THE BOARD FOR EVERYBODY.

SO I THINK THERE'S FINALLY AN APPETITE TO TRULY LOOK AT THINGS THAT A LOT OF US HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR FOR 20-PLUS YEARS.

SO HOPEFULLY THEY WILL LOOK AT THAT.

THE FLIP SIDE OF A SHORT SPRING BREAK MEANS IT'S A REALLY LONG APRIL, MAY, AND JUNE IT WILL BE, WITH THE ONLY DAY REALLY BEING OFF IS MEMORIAL DAY.
